There's a moment every November that signals the start of the holidays.
For me, it's when certain radio stations switch to 24/7 Christmas music. Maybe for you, it's the lights at the mall or the performances at your child's school. Whatever it is, you know that the holiday season has truly arrived.
Unfortunately, fraud isn't a seasonal threat. It's a 24/7, constantly evolving challenge. As Senior Vice President of Risk Management and Internal Audit at Apple Federal Credit Union, it's my job to keep your money and your data safe.
Here's how we're tackling fraud from every angle at Apple FCU, and why it takes all of us to stay ahead.
What We're Seeing
The game has changed when it comes to protecting your information. Fraudsters are smarter, faster and more coordinated than ever before.
We've seen a rise in criminals trying to break into accounts by spoofing phone numbers and impersonating Apple FCU staff. Bad guys are both using fake identities to try and open accounts and testing stolen credit card numbers online.
These incidents are part of a broader shift in how fraud operates. Fortunately, Apple FCU has invested in state-of-the-art security tools that let us respond quickly and effectively.
Multi-Layered Defense
As a football fan, I know that sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
The same goes for fighting fraud. Apple FCU has built a prevention strategy that's proactive, not reactive when it comes to protecting your information and accounts.
One of the most effective tools we use is real-time monitoring. Apple FCU partners with top-notch cybersecurity organizations in order to detect anomalies and flag suspicious behavior before it becomes fraud. We also file reports that support law enforcement efforts under the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering regulations.
Our audit team doesn't just assess controls; they help identify blind spots and pressure-test our response. Everyone at Apple FCU, from our frontline staff to our back-office support, knows it is their job to help prevent in-person scams and social engineering.
At the end of the day, our greatest protection comes from our members. The more you know about fraud and how to spot it, the safer we all are.
Preventing Fraud
Fraud prevention is a team sport. Luckily, there are many ways that you can help.
Keep Your Guard Up
Be cautious of unusual behavior or requests over the phone, especially if someone asks for account access or verification codes. Apple Federal Credit Union will never ask for personal or account information via email, phone or the internet.
If you receive a request for your passcode, account number or digital banking credentials via phone, email or text, it is a scam.
Report Right Away
If you suspect fraud, hang up and call us at 703-788-4800. Our staff is ready to answer your questions and protect your accounts.
Only respond “Not Fraud” to a fraud alert on your account if you're 100% sure the transaction is legitimate. If someone urges you to approve a charge you didn't make, it's likely part of a scam.
When in doubt, reach out. We'd rather investigate a false alarm than miss a real threat.
Protect Yourself
Use strong passwords and avoid sharing sensitive account information. You can also enable alerts in Apple FCU Online or the Mobile App to receive notifications for:
- Successful logins
- Credit or Debit Card use
- Changes to your contact information.
These alerts provide greater visibility and control over your accounts.
Finally, you can access the latest fraud news, safety tips and advice through our Fraud Prevention portal. There you will find stories about the latest scams and tips to prevent fraud before it starts.
Looking Ahead
Apple FCU will continue to safely integrate artificial intelligence into our detection models, allowing us to respond to potential fraud in real time. We're also exploring enhanced biometric authentication, and expanding staff training on fraud trends and response protocols.
Ultimately, our goal is to keep your data and your accounts safe. Every day, our teams work together to make sure we are protecting our members and our institution.
It's not just about stopping fraud—it's about building trust. Thank you for helping protect Apple FCU, and thank you for being a member of our credit union.
