Account Takeover Fraud: What It Is and How To Protect Yourself From It

As technology rapidly changes and improves, fraudsters are becoming more adept in the ways they try to access your financial information.

One of the most serious threats is account takeover fraud, a scheme where criminals impersonate you to gain control of your accounts, make unauthorized purchases and change security settings to lock you out.

At Apple Federal Credit Union, we want to help you recognize the warning signs and take the right steps to protect yourself and your money. Read on to learn more about what account takeover fraud looks like and how you can stop it in its tracks.

What is account takeover fraud?

Account takeover fraud occurs when a scammer uses stolen personal information to break into your financial accounts and act as if they're you.

Unlike traditional fraud, where someone may simply use a stolen card number, account takeover gives the scammer full control, from changing contact details and PINs to lifting fraud protections and making large purchases.

The more control they have, the more damage they can do. That's why awareness and early action are critical.

How the Scam Typically Works

Before ever contacting you, scammers usually collect personal details from malicious sources like data breaches or the dark web. They may already know your name, address and even your username. But to take full control, they need more, such as your one-time passcode (OTP), member number or answers to security questions.

Here's a common scenario: You receive a phone call that appears to be from Apple FCU's Fraud Prevention or Technical Support team. The caller may sound professional and claim there's suspicious activity on your account. They'll ask for personal details and say they've sent you an OTP for verification. Once you provide it, the scammer can use that code to access your account and take control.

In some cases, once they've begun making unauthorized purchases, the fraudster may instruct you to respond "Not Fraud" to text alerts from Apple FCU's actual Fraud Prevention Department, tricking the system into allowing the charges.

How To Protect Your Apple FCU Account

At Apple FCU, your security is our top priority. Here's how you can protect yourself from account takeover fraud.

Set Up Real-Time Alerts

Enable alerts in Apple FCU Online or Mobile App to receive notifications for:

  • Successful logins
  • Credit or Debit Card use
  • Changes to your contact information.

These alerts give you greater visibility and control over your accounts.

Never Share Your One-Time Passcodes

No one from Apple FCU will ever ask you for your OTP, account number or digital banking credentials. If you receive a request like this via phone, email or text, it's a scam. Hang up and contact us directly at 703-788-4800.

Be Cautious of Fraud Alerts

Only respond "Not Fraud" to alerts if you are 100% certain the transaction is legitimate. If someone urges you to approve a charge you didn't make, it's likely part of a scam.

Monitor Your Accounts Frequently

Regularly reviewing your account activity is one of the best ways to spot and stop fraud early. Set a reminder to log into Apple FCU Online or Mobile App at least once a week to check for unusual activity.

eStatements offer a safer, faster way to review your monthly account activity, and they reduce your risk of mail fraud or identity theft.

Stay Educated

Fraud tactics evolve constantly. Stay up to date on the latest scams by visiting our Fraud Prevention Center or reading updates in our monthly Incider newsletter.

What To Do If You Suspect Account Takeover Fraud

If you think someone has accessed your Apple FCU account:

  1. Call us immediately at 703-788-4800 to report the issue
  2. If you can still log in to Apple FCU Online or Mobile App, change your password and update your security questions. Additionally, use Card Manager to block your Card(s) temporarily or report them lost/stolen
  3. Consider enrolling in a fraud monitoring solution like Allstate Identity Protection, which can offer additional safeguards for your online identity.

We're Here to Help

Account takeover can feel overwhelming, but you're never alone. Our team is here to help secure your accounts and guide you through the recovery process if needed.

Remember: stay vigilant, trust your instincts and never share your account information or security codes with anyone.
