The Best Birthday Gift Ever

My favorite birthday gift ever was my first Apple FCU account. I was thirteen, and when I opened the box and saw the debit card with the Apple FCU logo, I literally gasped. I was excited for two reasons:

  1. None of my friends had debit cards yet, so I instantly became the coolest one in my group, and
  2. I finally got to be a member of the credit union that has always felt like my second home.

My mom has worked in the Stafford branch for as long as I can remember, which meant I basically grew up there. Even on her days off, I''d tag along to make a deposit or just say hi to her coworkers. The team always kept me entertained with stories, and the kids'' play area they used to have made the branch feel less like a bank and more like somewhere I belonged. Even if my mom had worked anywhere else, I think I still would''ve loved Apple FCU just as much.

As I''ve gotten older, more independent and moved to the other side of the country, Apple has supported me in so many ways as I''ve learned to manage money on my own. I honestly can''t imagine knowing as much as I do today if I had banked anywhere else.

My College Financial Reality Check

I''m still adjusting to the time difference between Virginia and Oregon. Even though I''m hours behind my friends and family now, the University of Oregon was the only place that felt truly right for me when I toured schools. I wanted something totally different—and I''m taking a Rock Climbing 101 course next semester, which pretty much proves I got it.

But I think a lot of college students would agree that even when you''re exactly where you want to be, college is a challenge. Once you add money into the picture, it becomes overwhelming fast. I arrived on campus in August with every dollar I''d saved from my summer job. By December, I couldn''t wait to clock in to work again.

Sure, textbook costs and eating out with friends didn''t help, but the real issue was that, for the first time, no one was telling me I had to save. I learned the hard way what spending too freely looks like, and suddenly, budgeting was something I was going to have to figure out.

Banking Nearly 3,000 Miles from Home

My hometown Apple FCU branch is almost 2,900 miles away, so I''ve basically mastered digital banking at this point. Apple makes it super easy to stay connected from anywhere, and I love knowing I have options to get help. I''ve sent messages through the app, chatted with Apple''s Virtual Assistant (AVA) on the homepage, used the virtual branch and I''m pretty sure I''ve talked to every Contact Center rep by now.

As I started trying to manage my money better, I turned to AppleFCU.org to read articles, and opening an eXtras Student Savings has made me so much more intentional with my savings since I''m earning a high rate. I also keep tabs on their social pages for tips, videos and contests, even though I probably can''t win because my mom works there. I just like seeing what the cool prizes are.

I''ve recently become obsessed with the Family page. The College Essentials section has helped me understand everything from saving to student loans, and I''ve already been checking out Ready to Launch for an idea of what''s waiting for me after graduation. It''s given me answers to questions I didn''t know I should be asking yet—and that makes me feel a lot more confident.

How the Apple Scholars Program Got Me to Oregon

Apple FCU was supporting me even before I moved across the country. Once I committed to Oregon, reality hit: I wasn''t just paying normal college costs, I was paying to move my whole life to the West Coast. I started applying for every scholarship I could find.

The 2025 Apple Scholars scholarship was already on my radar because a student from my high school had won it before. I barely remember most of the applications I filled out, but I do remember that Apple Scholars was one of the easiest to complete. The website was so organized, and knowing exactly what I had saved or submitted was a lifesaver when I was juggling dozens of applications.

What stood out most to me was that the application was entirely anonymous. It made the process feel fair and focused purely on my achievements. Even if I hadn''t won, I would have felt good knowing the scholarships were awarded to students who truly deserved them.

A few months later, right before one of my last lacrosse games, my dad had something he needed to tell me. Like a lot of teens would, I immediately assumed I was in trouble for something. What else could be so important right before my game? He pulled out his phone to record, looked at me and told me I''d won one of the $3,000 Apple Scholars scholarships—one of the biggest awards I would receive from all of my scholarship applications. I played that entire game grinning like crazy.

What''s Next for Me (and My Savings)

Whether I stay in Oregon after graduation or move back to Virginia, I honestly can''t picture banking anywhere else. Everyone I talk to, whether at the branch or in the Contact Center, genuinely cares about helping me find solutions that fit where I am in life. I never feel pressured to open something I don''t need. I just feel supported as a college student trying her best.

This summer, one of my goals is to learn even more about long-term savings. I keep reading about the Bonus Certificates, and the idea of putting money somewhere I can''t touch is actually super appealing, as are guaranteed returns. I''ll also be doing normal summer things: working hard, hanging out with friends and resetting after a long school year.
